Guest Blog: What To Do If You Find Yourself In An Unwanted Long-Term Energy Contract

Lee Robinson, from SightCare preferred supplier, Beaconplus, discusses what you should be wary of in terms of energy contracts.

We’ve recently received a growing number of enquiries from SightCare members (and other businesses in the clinical sector), complaining about automatically being signed up to long-term energy contract via brokers.  Over the last few months, we have received multiple enquiries relating to the energy broker Bionic, where they have implemented “Do-It-For-You” contracts on uncompetitive terms, without providing sufficient information.  The mainstream BBC One TV the “One Show” recently did a segment on this exact issue, focusing on Bionic and the article told the story of an optician in Debyshire, that many of you may be able to relate to.

From our experience, many energy brokers are often motivated to secure their commissions over a long-term period, as opposed to doing what is right for their client.  Obviously, it’s very difficult to tell what will happen with the energy market, but we have seen examples, where businesses have been advised to enter 5-year contracts, when the market was at record levels, and they are now paying nearly 4 times over the current market amounts.  We also believe that the clinical sector in particularly (opticians, dentists and veterinary) have been targeted because of the busy nature of the industries.

If you have experienced anything like this, please contact Lee Robinson on 01565 755600 or e-mail leerobinson@sightcare.co.uk, who will be able to advise further.  Similarly, if you would like a review of any aspects of your telecoms and utility arrangements, please contact Lee directly or forward a latest invoice for review.  Lee has worked in the clinical sector for over 20 years, and they typically save 34% on their telecoms and utility arrangements, using a performance-based approach.
