VCHP calls for keen volunteers
Vision Care for Homeless People has appointed Helen Harms as Volunteer Operations Manager who is leading the drive to ensure the regional clinics are back up and running after the pandemic-forced suspension of the charity’s eye care services.
“So many homeless people are unable to access the eyecare service they need and we are striving to change that situation for the better. Making a difference to those people’s lives, and being able to work with volunteers who are so giving of their time, is hugely satisfying,” said Helen.
“Volunteering at VCHP clinics around the country is a talking point amongst many students, but we are keen to reach out to those in practice who find they have a spare half day once a month. If several volunteers each offered a few sessions a year we would be able to run a regular service for homeless people,” she added.
VCHP has a thorough risk assessment procedure and by working with host centres is able to provide as safe a service as possible. Comprehensive infection control measures, PPE and air purifiers are sited in every clinic.
An added bonus for optometrists who volunteer is that when they become involved in the clinics they are offered free CPD, courtesy of Eyecare Education.
The Birmingham, Brighton, Exeter, Gloucester, Leeds, London and Manchester clinics are generously supported by the optical community are well equipped with diagnostic technology and an easy to use PMS.
